Manchester United have opened the door for Anthony Martial to leave Old Trafford — but only if the deal is right for the club.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick says he understands Martial’s frustration following talks with the unhappy France striker at Carrington last week. But he insists that Martial will stay during the January transfer window unless it suits United and warned that another Covid-hit season has emphasised the need for a big squad.

The 26-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford for another two-and-a-half years and his £200,000-a-week wages could be an obstacle in any transfer negotiations.

A loan move is more likely and Sevilla have been strongly linked with Martial, who is understood to be interested in a move to Spain after telling Rangnick he wants to leave due to a lack of first-team action.

The former Monaco player has scored 79 goals in 268 games since joining United in 2015 for a fee worth up to £58million but he has made only four starts this season and not featured in the new manager’s first three games due to injury.

‘We spoke at length,’ said Rangnick ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash at Newcastle.
