Iran got the better of bitter rivals Iraq in Tehran to become the first Asian confederation side to book their place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

There were 10,000 fans packed in Tehran's Azadi Stadium, with Iranian women allowed to attend for the first time in almost three years, as the Group A leaders secured victory through Mehdi Taremi's strike.

Victory ensures that Dragan Skocic's Iran side are now 10 points clear of third place in their Asian qualifying group, with just nine points remaining to compete for.
