Celtic hero Chris Sutton has praised Scottish rivals Rangers for their performance in the Europa League final but could not resist having a cheeky jibe at their penalty taking, while fans and pundits describe their pride.

Rangers suffered agony in Seville after losing 5-4 to Frankfurt on penalties to see their 50-year wait for a European trophy continue. 

Rangers took the lead through Joe Aribo to pile the pressure on but the Bundesliga side struck back when Rafael Borre stabbed home to level.

The German team ultimately emerged victorious when neither side could break the deadlock and the final came down to a penalty shootout, in which Aaron Ramsey missed to hand Frankfurt the victory. 

Former Celtic striker Sutton hailed the Scottish side for giving their all to the final showdown but claimed he expected a higher quality of spotkicks as he had a dig at the number for penalties the Glasgow rivals had been awarded this season. 

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: 'Great effort in the Europa League from Rangers and the players have given their all. 

'With the amount of penalties they’ve been awarded this season I fancied them in the shootout mind. Well done
