In only his second campaign in the NRL, the 19-year-old has announced himself as rugby league's newest superstar to the tune of seven tries in the last three rounds. Cobbo's performances have put the NRL world on alert and, according to the Courier Mail, reigning premiers Penrith and Melbourne are the only two clubs yet to declare their interest. A staggering 14 NRL clubs are reportedly chasing the signing of Selwyn Cobbo The teenager is under contract with the Broncos until the end of next season and earlier this month the club began negotiations to keep him at Red Hill until the end of 2025. Crucially for the Broncos, rival clubs cannot formally submit offers to the young gun until November 1. Brisbane are understood to have offered Cobbo north of $600,000-a-year, more than three times his current salary of $180,000-a-season. Significantly, however, salary cap restrictions mean the Broncos can't match the $900,000-a-year pay-packets the winger's suitors would be prepared to table. The teenager's agent, Tas Bartlett of Pacific Sports Management, revealed interest in the Broncos star started six months ago but has sky-rocketed over the past two weeks. The Broncos gun scored two tries as Brisbane beat Newcastle 36-12 on Thursday night The teenager has scored seven tries in the past three rounds as Brisbane soared up the ladder 'I haven’t had to pick the phone up to create interest, all the calls are in-bound and I’ve had 14 clubs contact me to express interest in wanting to sign Selwyn,' he said. 'The interest has come over the last three to six months [...] but the interest has really picked up in the last two weeks. [...] It’s quite incredible what Selwyn has achieved so far this season [...] he is a special talent.' Cobbo scored a double in Round 9 as the Broncos beat the Rabbitohs 32-12, prompting Roosters supremo Nick Politis to enquire about signing him. The star back followed up his exploit with a hat-trick as Brisbane thrashed Manly 38-0 in Magic Round and bagged another brace on Thursday night as the Broncos beat Newcastle 36-12 to make it five wins in a row. Cobbo is under contract until the end of next season on a $180,000-a-year salary Brisbane coach Kevin Walters, who gave Cobbo his NRL debut last season, remains hopeful the Queenslander will commit his future to the club. 'We are very hopeful we can keep him here,' Walters said two weeks ago. 'We see Selwyn as a long-term player for our club, we love what he brings, even at such a young age. He has played some great footy this year which is great for us as a team and great for Broncos fans. Broncos coach Kevin Walters is hopeful the club can keep Cobbo at Red Hill after opening negotiations for a new deal until the end of 2025 worth north of $600,000 'Selwyn looks good in Maroon and we intend on keeping him here for many years.' Speaking to the Courier Mail, Brisbane football boss Ben Ikin said he was unconcerned by the speculations surrounding Cobbo. 'I am pragmatic about the situation,' the former centre, who won the 2000 Grand Final with Brisbane, said. 'I can see how well Selwyn is playing and it wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of smart recruitment minds at other clubs are seeing exactly the same thing. [...] It’s not an uncommon problem the Broncos face.' Read more: Share or comment on this article: All rights reserved for this news site (dailymail) and under his responsibility
