Andrew Robertson accused UEFA of making things up after the biggest game in world football was wrecked by incompetence and shocking mismanagement.

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid in the Champions League final but the result effectively became inconsequential given the widespread reports of shocking behaviour by French police at the Stade de France, coupled with abysmal organisation and UEFA’s misinformation.

Robertson, the Liverpool left-back, was one of several squad members who had members of his inner circle affected by the chaos outside, with one of his friends initially refused entry to the stadium – even though they had a legitimate ticket.

Joel Matip’s brother, Marvin, had to flee the Stade de France along with his pregnant wife after police – under no provocation – resorted to spraying tear gas indiscriminately. They were among thousands of supporters, including grandparents and children, who were treated the same.

It was clear as Robertson spoke he was still numb from the pain caused by losing to Madrid again, as they did in Kyiv four years ago, but he had enough clarity to speak forcefully about the situation that led to kick-off being delayed for 30 minutes. He put the blame squarely on the authorities.

‘We all had family and friends here,’ said Robertson. ‘None of us were on our phones (before the game) but then you come in after the game, go on your phone and you have seen everyone struggling to get in.

‘The French police were being pretty heavy-handed; people who had got legitimate tickets were being told they had fake tickets, which happened to one of my mates. I can assure you it wasn’t a fake ticket so when it comes to that, they have just panicked.

‘Luckily (my mate) managed to get in because one of the club representatives sorted it. But they said it was a fake ticket, which I can assure you it wasn’t. I think they were making it up at times and panicked. For me it shouldn’t really happen. UEFA should have been better organised.’

Liverpool were outraged to discover that UEFA attributed the situation to being caused by fans turning up late to the stadium without
