Thanks to FIFA and the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar, the traditional summer bonanza of the World Cup has been scrapped, the tournament rescheduled for the winter months. With current temperatures in the Gulf state hitting 49 degrees celsius, it makes sense.

It does leave a football-shaped hole in the sporting schedule over the coming months, with the usual festival shifted by five months. But that is not to say there is nothing to keep sports fans entertained.

Major tournaments

Outside of football, the usual array of summer sporting tournaments to go ahead, and in most circumstances, with full crowds for the first time since Covid.

The sight of a packed Wimbledon will be a welcome return, though there are question marks over appearances of a few of their star turns.
