Three Melbourne players reportedly attempted to hold back Steven May during a booze-fuelled stoush with teammate Jake Melksham.

The latter punched May as the Demons pair were involved in a brawl at the posh Entrecote restaurant in Prahran at a dinner organised by teammate Joel Smith on June 5.

May was suspended for a week by Melbourne for drinking while he was supposed to be recovering from concussion, while Melksham need two rounds of surgery after developing an infection on his hand.

The Demons forward allegedly stood up for Smith, who had been on the receiving end of some friendly sledging from other Melbourne players. His intervention, however, did not go down well with May and a verbal altercation soon escalated into something more serious.

According to veteran AFL journalist Caroline Wilson, the fracas spilled out of the restaurant, where three Demons attempted in vain to restrain May.

'Three players were trying to hold Steven May back — and were unable to do that — as he went for Jake Melksham,' she said told Channel 9’s Footy Classified on Wednesday
