The day started with a few friendly introductions. Virimi Vakatawa and Levani Botia were first to arrive for the morning meeting, walking over to shake hands in their fresh-from-the-packet Barbarians T-shirts.

One by one, the room filled with superstars. Charles Ollivon, George Kruis and Will Skelton were last to take a seat, prompting everyone behind them to shuffle around for a view beyond their giant frames.

Before the coaching briefs began, chairman John Spencer stood up to welcome everybody, delivering a few words about the late Phil Bennett.
