Sarina Wiegman's England team will hope to go one step further than any Lionesses squad before them at this summer's European Championships

The last three tournaments have brought relative success, with Mark Sampson guiding the side to the semi-finals at the 2015 World Cup before they reached the same stage at Euro 2017 and the 2019 World Cup under Phil Neville

But the closest England's women have come to silverware was at Euro 2009 in Finland, when they matched their performance at the 1984 Championships by making it all the way to the final.

Sadly it wasn't to be for Hope Powell's team as they were beaten 6-2 by Germany (it's always the way), but they still rank as one of England's best ever female sides.

Sportsmail looks at the starting XI and substitutes from that day to see what they're up to now.

GK - Rachel Brown-Finnis

Having made her England debut at 16 years old, Rachel Brown-Finnis played 82 times between the sticks for the Lionesses and featured at two World Cups alongside Euro 2009.

Since retiring in 2015 due to a persistent knee injury, the former Everton shot-stopper can regularly be found as a pundit - usually on BT Sport's Saturday afternoon programme BT Sport Score

Brown-Finnis, now 41, will be a part of the BBC's coverage of the European Championships this summer.

RB - Alex Scott

Now she is a superstar of British broadcasting, it's easy to forget that Alex Scott also had a superb career on the pitch.

The 37-year-old is England's fourth-most capped player of all-time with 140 appearances to her name, while she played at seven major tournaments. At club level, Scott won six league titles and seven FA Cups with Arsenal.

Scott's insightful style and engaging persona have led to a number of high-profile presenting gigs across the BBC's football coverage, as well as at the Olympics and Sports Personality of the Year. She will be a lead presenter for this summer's Euros.

The former defender's competitive nature has even seen her dip her toe into reality TV on Strictly Come Dancing and Bear Grylls' Mission Survive.

CB - Faye White (c)

The captain and oldest member of England's squad at 31 years old, Faye White scored in the group stage draw against Sweden - one of 12 goals in her 90 caps. Her Lionesses career spanned 15 years and five major tournaments, with a record four of those as skipper.

The centre-back quit international football in 2012 as she was expecting her first child and retired from playing completely a year later as a knee problem meant she was unable to return.

She would take up a marketing role at Arsenal - the club where she spent her whole career - and is another player to have forged a career in punditry with the BBC, BT Sport and other broadcasters.

CB - Anita Asante

After a glittering career that included five English top-flight titles, a Champions League crown and 71 England caps, Anita Asante announced her retirement from football in April.

The defender, who played in five major tournaments with the Lionesses, spent her final two seasons at Aston Villa in the WSL, having also played at Arsenal, Chelsea and in the USA and Sweden.

Asante, 37, is another player who will form part of the BBC's coverage this summer but she has stated her desire to move into coaching and one day manage the Gunners, her childhood club.

LB - Casey Stoney

Casey Stoney succeeded White as England captain in 2012 and went on to earn 130 caps in total - the fifth-most in Lionesses history.

Upon her retirement in 2018, the former defender instantly became part of Phil Neville's national team backroom staff and four months later she was appointed manager of Manchester United's newly-formed women's team.

After securing promotion to the WSL in her debut season in charge, Stoney achieved consecutive fourth-place finishes in United's first two seasons in the top-flight. She departed the Red Devils last summer and is now at the helm of US side San Diego Wave.

CM - Jill Scott

Following Asante's recent retirement, Jill Scott is now the only member of England's Euro 2009 starting line-up that is still playing. Not only that, the 35-year-old is still involved in the Lionesses set-up, albeit in a much less prominent role.

Wiegman has selected Scott in her squad for this summer's Euros,
