Having a pie and Coke at the footy is almost mandatory - and now it can be revealed it is also former NRL star Sam Burgess's only match payment for coaching New South Wales Group 2 side the Orara Valley Axemen.
Covid impacted many bush footy clubs and the Axemen were no different, forced to withdraw from competition because of a lack of players.
South Sydney Rabbitohs owner Russell Crowe stepped in to help them back into the senior ranks and brokered the deal that delivered Burgess as coach.

Burgess commanded top dollar as one of footy's biggest stars as he helped drive South Sydney to the 2014 premiership, but now he is only being paid in sponsor's products for his trouble.
The Daily Telegraph has received a copy of Burgess's contract that shows his payment is only: '1 x Garlo's Pie (flavour of choice) and 1 x soft drink (flavour of choice) at the completion of each home game regardless of result'.
