A cruel family twist has emerged following the death of an Aussie Rules legend in South Australia on Wednesday night.

Neil Kerley, 88, died in a car crash after smashing through a fence into a paddock at Walker Flat in the Murraylands region.

In a shocking turn of events for the Kerley family, it comes three years to the day - June 30 - that Donald John Kerley, Neil's son, passed away from lung cancer.

The devastated family also lost their daughter and sister Robin to a heart attack a few years ago.

Additionally, it has since been revealed Neil Kerley suffered a medical episode behind the wheel which resulted in his passing.

In a cruel twist of fate, it has since emerged June 29 was also the date Neil Kerley's son died three years ago

Mr Kerley, affectionately known as 'King Kerls' by countless adoring footy fans, was about 4km from his home at around 5.30pm when he smashed into the fence.

Following his death, a number of Kerley's good mates made their way to Swan Reach Golf Club on Thursday to swap stories on the footy legend.

Close friend Des Whyte described Kerley as 'the most motivated man I’ve ever come across.'

Born Donald Neil Kerley in Barmera, Riverland in 1934, he was affectionately known as 'Knuckles' due to his reputation as one of the SANFL's leading and toughest players.

On the field, he first won a flag with West Adelaide in 1961 before defecting to
