sport news Eddie Jones claims the referee tried to 'help' Australia trends now Eddie Jones claims the referee tried to 'help' Australia and 'even up' their clash against England after sending off Darcy Swain, as he admits 'the results aren't good enough' following a fourth straight defeat Darcy Swain was sent off in the first half after headbutting second row Jonny Hill Defeat means Eddie Jones' side have lost their last four games since February Playing against 14 men for the majority of the game England toiled throughout By Julian Bovill For Mailonline Published: 17:29 BST, 2 July 2022 | Updated: 17:29 BST, 2 July 2022 Viewcomments England head coach Eddie Jones has claimed that the referee James Doleman attempted to even up the clash with Australia after sending off Darcy Swain. Doleman showed Swain a straight red card after he headbutted lock forward Jonny Hill during the first half. England were ahead 6-3 at the time of the sending off but went on to lose the game despite playing against 14 men for the majority of the encounter. The defeat means England have lost their last four fixtures, a run stretching back to the start of March. Eddie Jones said that the referee attempted to even up the encounter after the sending off Speaking after the defeat, Jones claimed that the 'history' of the game suggests referees will always try to 'even up' encounters after showing red cards but that his team should have been more adept at ensuring they capitalised on their advantage. 'That always happens, he said. You look at the history of the game, whenever you get a red card the referee evens it up. That’s normal and we’ve got to be good enough to handle it.' 'When you play against 14 men the referee has a significant impact on the game and you’ve got to be good enough to understand what that is and we weren’t good enough to understand what that is. And therefore we paid the price,' he added. Darcy Swain was shown a red card in the first half after headbutting Jonny Hill 'But that happens in every game of rugby I’ve seen, because they’re nice blokes, referees. 'I’m not criticising the referees, I’m not using it as an excuse, that’s the reality of rugby. He evens it up. He helps the team with the red card.' The defeat only heightens the pressure on Jones ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup. Calls have grown since the Six Nations for the RFU to part ways with the Australian, with the governing body so far having resisted those calls. Eddie Jones accepted that England needed to be better and said results were not good enough currently Jones accepted after the game that results are not currently up to scratch. 'I’m disappointed that we’ve lost. The results aren’t good enough. I accept that and that’s my responsibility,' he said. 'We’ll work hard to turn it around. We’ve got a committed group of players, a committed coaching group. It’s painful but I know the guys will keep working hard, we’re committed to winning the series 2-1.'
