An Australian baseball star has hit out at the 'baffling' gun laws in the United States after the nation was hit by another tragedy in Chicago.

Six people were shot and killed following a mass shooting in Highway Park, an affluent suburb of Chicago, during a July 4 parade.

A total of 26 victims aged between eight and 85 were injured, with six still receiving hospital treatment. Robert 'Bobby' Crimo III, a 22-year-old rapper, was arrested by police in North Lake Forest, Chicago on Monday evening.

According to Forbes, 306 mass shootings have been committed in 2022, with the figure on track to exceed the record set last year (692). The same outlet reports that 10,072 have died due to firearms - including incidental and accidental killings but not suicides - this year.

Now, Chicago White Sox baseball star Liam Hendriks - son of WAFL legend Geoff Hendriks - has demanded 'change' to the United States' 'baffling' gun laws in the wake of Monday's attack.

'Something needs to change,' Hendriks said via NBC Sports. 'Something needs to be done, something needs to happen, because there's way too many people losing their lives.
