Wayne Bennett has revealed that he made an offer to recruit Paul Green at the Dolphins just five days before his shock death, with the supercoach describing Thursday's news as 'simply unbelievable'.

Bennett, 72, told the Courier Mail that the NRL newcomers were in advanced stages of talks with Green over a return to coaching as a fellow assistant alongside former St Helens boss Kristian Woolf.

The coaching veteran believed that Green, a premiership-winning coach with the Cowboys in 2015, could rejuvenate his career after a stint with the Redcliffe side.

However, Green was found dead at his home in Brisbane on Thursday morning, sending the NRL world into shock.  

'Yes, I had spoken to Paul about coming to the Dolphins,' Bennett said. 'I wasn't sure if he was coming, but we were in negotiations with him and I was pretty confident of Paul taking the job.
