Lee Dixon claimed Manchester United players 'need to be responsible' for their disgraceful performance as he slammed the woeful side's experienced stars for 'going through the motions'. 

The Red Devils' nightmare start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday with their second successive defeat.  

United found themselves 4-0 down after 35 minutes at the Brentford Community Stadium after a stunning first-half display from the hosts.

Dixon was scathing of United's error-ridden display branding it 'disgraceful' and 'terrible' as he insisted they were not doing their job. 

'You don't play for Manchester United out of luck,' he said on NBC. 'You get recruited, you get through the system, you get the opportunity to play for one of the biggest teams in the world. And with that opportunity you have to take it. 

'We all play badly, we all have bad games. But to start looking at Ten Hag now and asking how's he gonna fix this, forget him for a minute, forget the club for a minute, you've got to look at the players, you've got to look at them individually and what's going on out there.

'The mistakes that are going on, the lack of effort that's going on. They're not doing their jobs. You look at the positions they get themselves into, effectively terrible. No organization.'

He slammed the players as he claimed the experienced stars are simply 'going through the motions' as they blamed the manager rather than their own performance. 

He added: 'They've got some seriously experienced players out there just going through the motions because they think they can't fix it, they think it's the manager's fault. No it's not, it's their fault. They're the players who go out.

'Yes, tactics play a part in it but you have to be responsible for your own performance and that out there today was disgraceful. Some of them dropped their heads after the second goal went in. They're not marking players, that sort of stuff. 

'So forget the manager, forget the club, look at the players. Start with individuals and that's not good enough. Brilliant by Brentford by the way.'
