A tournament designed to thrill a new audience with big-hitting culminated in an old-school, low-scoring shoot-out last night as Trent Rockets defeated Manchester Originals by two wickets.

The Hundred has habitually been branded as best v best by the ECB but drew attention for its lack of star quality on its big night through Joe Root’s decision not to feature for the Rockets.

England’s players were given the responsibility of making the calls of their own availability but the absence of the most recognisable name from either side, due to a prioritising of Thursday’s final Test, was the latest blow to a competition dogged by second-season syndrome. Some of Root’s international colleagues chose to swerve the 100-ball matches altogether.
