Bulldogs football boss Phil Gould has made the startling claim Penrith star Taylan May should be congratulated after he was found guilty of assaulting an 18-year-old in a pub during the club's grand final celebrations. 

May, 21, was found guilty in court last week of assault occasioning bodily harm following the incident on Queensland's Sunshine Coast last year.

It involved a man, 18, who was reportedly being a 'pest' at the Duporth Tavern in Maroochydore on October 8 when May was out celebrating Penrith's premiership win days earlier with superstar halfback Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai and May's older brother Tyrone.

CCTV footage showed May walk up behind the man while he was talking with Cleary and Tyrone May. He could then be seen grabbing the man by the collar of his shirt and forcibly pulling him to the ground, injuring the victim's neck.

The Panthers winger has been banned for two matches but will play in the finals after the NRL outraged fans and clubs by suspending his punishment until next season.
