After raising a banner in their home stadium - the very one they conquered the Cincinnati Bengals nearly seven months ago - the Los Angeles Rams looked like a shell of their Super Bowl winning selves against the Buffalo Bills Thursday night.

The league's defending champions couldn't score nearly enough points to stay in the game - as Buffalo won on the NFL's opening night 31-10.

Rams head coach Sean McVay was stunned by his team's offensive inconsistency and tendency to turn the ball over, saying the team has a lot to learn in the coming weeks.

'When you look at a lot of the ways that this game unfolded, [I] feel a huge sense of responsibility to this team,' McVay said after the game.

'We weren't ready to go. I take a lot of pride in that, and that's on me. I've got to do better. There were a lot of decisions that I made that I felt like didn't put our players in good enough spots.

'So it was a humbling experience, but we're going to stay connected. We're going to all look inward. We're going to do a better job moving forward.'

Strategically, there were some questionable decisions on offense. The Rams decided to utilize a silent snap count in spite of playing at home.

'Once you go to silent count, you lose the advantage offensively to be able to get off the ball,' wide receiver Cooper Kupp said. 'So ideally, you don't want to be doing silent.'

'I mean, we prepared for it,' quarterback Matthew Stafford said. 'We prepared to be on the silent count at home again. But it wasn't something that we haven't done before.'
