Newcastle's NRLW coach has flown to the defence of Indigenous star Caitlin Moran in the wake of her disgraceful social media post about Queen Elizabeth's death in which she referred to the late Monarch as a 'dumb dog'.

The Indigenous All Star, who has also represented Australia and NSW, sent shockwaves through the footy world after her deplorable social media post on the day of the Queen's death.

In a since-deleted Instagram post, Moran wrote: 'Todays a good f***ing day, uncle Luke (country singer Luke Coombs) announces his tour, and this dumb dog (Queen Elizabeth) dies. Happy f***ing Friday'.

Even after going viral, the post was still left up for almost nine hours - appearing to show the NRLW star's lack of contrition.

The comments, regardless of backgrounds or beliefs, were widely condemned given the highly-sensitive nature of the day; and they particularly drew the ire of shock jock Ray Hadley.

'It's perhaps the most reprehensible thing I've ever seen connected to rugby league,' he said on his 2GB show.

'If she plays tomorrow (for the Knights against the Roosters) it will be a disgrace of monumental proportions.'

But play she did.

The NRL announced that their Integrity Unit would be looking into the comments, but in the meanwhile, Moran was able to play for Newcastle in their heartbreaking 18-16 loss to the Roosters.

She even put on a spectacular try assist to get her side back into the contest, but fans were not impressed by the controversial decision to allow her to play.

'Letting Caitlin Moran play after her disgusting post about Queen Elizabeth's passing is inexcusable. The Knights are f***ed', wrote one fan, while another labelled the decision to allow her to play as an 'actual f***ing disgrace'.

Many lashed the double standards; with one pointing out Raiders coach Ricky Stuart copped a one-match suspension and $25,000 fine for calling Panthers player Jaeman Salmon a 'weak-gutted dog' during a post-match press conference.
