Triple M have decided not to extend the radio contract of AFL great Wayne Carey beyond this year.

On Wednesday, the station confirmed Carey, 51, will not be part of their football coverage in 2023.

Carey was taken off-air late last month after he was booted from Perth's Crown Casino when a small bag containing a powdered substance fell out of his pocket while he was gambling.

The former North Melbourne champion said the bag contained a crushed-up, legal painkiller - believed to be Aleve - which he took to manage neck and shoulder injuries stemming from his career in the AFL.

Southern Cross Radio's chief content officer Dave Cameron wished Carey well for 2023 and beyond when the announcement was made on Wednesday.

'On behalf of Triple M, we would like to thank Wayne for his services to our football commentary team, and we wish him the best for the future,' Cameron told The Age.

Carey's future with Channel Seven as an expert commentator remains clouded.

The two-time premiership winner reached an agreement with Seven under which he would stand down until the WA Police investigation is completed.

On Tuesday, WA Police stated their investigation into the matter was ongoing.

Carey also chose not to file his weekly column to The Age, with the newspaper to review its columnists at the end of the AFL season.

The ex-Kangaroos has since asked why police were not called if he had done something wrong.

'On two occasions they had an opportunity to call police,' he said. 'If what was alleged had happened, then police should have been called straight away.

'They had another opportunity when I went up to my room to call police and they never called the police.'

Speaking at a dinner at Wagga Wagga RSL Club in NSW's Riverina district last week, the champion centre-half forward even made light of his situation, which could end his media career.

'I thought, you know what, the easy decision would have been to curl up in a ball,' Carey told the crowd at the function put on by a group
