Gary Neville has branded an article written by Karren Brady in The Sun as 'hideous' after she said there should be no government appointed independent regulator in football.

Last week, it was reported that Prime Minister Liz Truss could make a U-turn and abandon plans to implement the new football regulator, something Neville said he was 'unnerved' by.

But the former Manchester United defender has now taken aim at West Ham vice-chairman, Brady, after she wrote that 'the government and the beautiful game should be many, many football pitches apart.'

Posting on Twitter Neville said: 'If you want to read the most hideous of articles then please read the below from Karren Brady!

'She suggests a new independent regulator is a "Labour Party idea." The fan-led review was a Conservative manifesto pledge and led by a Conservative MP! Self interest, lies and greed!'

Brady's article came after Labour Party Deputy Leader Angela Rayner said she had plans to create a new football regulator, which the columnist rubbished, claiming it would be like 'Ofsted for football' and that the FA does that job already.

'Football already has a regulator,' Brady said. 'It's called the Football Association.

'The FA is the right and proper regulator for the game in England and Wales.

'It looks after all areas of governance, including anti-doping, gambling, safeguarding — the list goes on.'
