NRL pundits and fans alike were left astonished by the omissions of Dylan Edwards and Nicho Hynes from Australia's squad for the Rugby League World Cup.

Edwards won the Clive Churchill Medal on Sunday night after delivering a superb performance as Penrith made it back-to-back premierships with a 28-12 win over Parramatta.

The Panthers fullback ran for 220 metres and broke eight tackles at Accor Stadium, but there was no place for him in the Kangaroos team when ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys announced the 24-man squad on Monday morning.

The selection raised several eyebrows.

'Cannot recall a Kangaroos World Cup team being chosen without the Dally M Medal winner and the Clive Churchill Medal winner,' tweeted Daily Telegraph journalist Phil Rothfield.
