Jurgen Klopp made the situation sound simple but, as he was gloomily resting his chin on his hand, his body language told you simple wasn’t an option.

‘We have to increase the amount of good moments and decrease the amount of not-so-good-moments,’ he muttered and how he must have wished that little synopsis could be easily applied to his team’s current predicament.

Liverpool aren’t playing like Liverpool but, most worryingly for Klopp, they don’t even look like Liverpool. There have always been times on his watch when they have shipped goals and been in helter-skelter contests but this period is proving particularly troubling.

Such is the manager’s concern, he is even considering tweaking his formation to make Liverpool difficult to break down once again, moving away from the tried and trusted 4-3-3 system that has brought so much success.

It would be a significant change if Klopp played three central defenders but it is more likely that he settles on 4-2-3-1 for the visit of Rangers, the first meeting between these decorated clubs in Europe.

Plenty will favour Liverpool to win this Battle of Britain comfortably but Klopp is absolutely not taking anything for granted, particularly given the results Giovanni van Bronckhorst has masterminded in Europe.

The way Rangers play, they could absolutely do damage to Liverpool if the gaps that have been present — especially so in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Brighton — continue to remain open, so it is little wonder Klopp is racking his brains to work out his next move.

‘No, we don’t have the time,’ said Klopp, when asked how he could hone a new system at the training pitches at their base in Kirkby. ‘Yes, we can improve. We can play exactly the same and do better, that is already a fix.

‘If we can do something (else), we will do, to make it easier for the boys. That is always the job, it is the same job I had when you win 12 games in a row. You have to stay on top and work on the details. That is what we do now, just with a different confidence level.
