Rosie Galligan has battled meningitis, serious injury and combining international rugby with a full-time job to realise her World Cup dream with England.

Now the Red Roses lock hopes a breakthrough tournament with Simon Middleton’s side in New Zealand can help her achieve her dream of a professional contract.

England have led the way as women’s rugby has stepped into professionalism. There are currently 30 players who have full-time rugby contracts funded by the RFU.

Five of the players currently part of the Red Roses World Cup squad remain amateur and when at home, still have to balance their rugby careers with work.

Galligan – who works for Harlequins as a community rugby officer and also plays for the London club – is one of them. She previously worked in marketing.

‘I took the Harlequins job so I could try and fulfil my dream of playing for England and my rugby potential,’ Galligan told Sportsmail in Auckland.
