sport news Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher warn Super League rebels over fresh plans trends now

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have fired a warning to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus as they insisted their fresh plans to create a European Super League will fail unless there is buy-in from English clubs and fans after widespread opposition scuppered their initial project.

Fears over the revival of the widely-condemned league have grown in recent weeks after reports emerged that the three rebel clubs would launch a new attempt.

A22 Sports Management, which was formed to sponsor and assist in the creation of the proposed 12-team breakaway league in April last year, recently hired a new chief executive, Bernd Reichart. That was a statement of intent in itself but Reichart then went on to claim it could be up and running by the 2024-25 season.

They claim the two organisations abused a dominant position under European competition law in first blocking the league's formation and then in their effects to sanction the clubs involved.

Premier League sides Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham pulled out in the face of criticism from their own supporters in addition to other key figures across the sport.

Carragher and Neville told Sportsmail they were concerned that the project was not dead in the water but said the rebels would have to come up with a viable proposition for the English game to even consider getting involved.

'The problem for the Super League is it was the Premier League with a few foreign teams in it - that is what it basically was,' Carragher said.
