A group of 30 former footballers — including several recently retired professionals who are suffering from early-onset dementia — are suing the FA for negligence on the grounds they have failed to protect players from brain injuries.

Sportsmail revealed two years ago that a number of former players were preparing to take legal action as a result of brain injuries sustained during their careers, and a Letter of Claim will today be sent to the FAs of England and Wales, as well as football’s international rule-making body IFAB.

Nine of the players will be named in the Letter of Claim today, but the overall group numbers more than 30, including a wide range of ages with experience of playing in all of the top four professional divisions.

The group includes recently retired professionals in their 30s with early-onset dementia and older men in their 60s and 70s, who are suffering from more debilitating conditions. 

Many of the players now suffer from various other irreversible neurological impairments, including CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and post-concussion syndrome. A number of families of players who died after suffering from brain injuries have also joined the claim, including the family of England’s World Cup winning hero Nobby Stiles.
