Female officials will be able to referee games involving conservative countries at the World Cup, FIFA's chairman of the referees committee Pierluigi Collina has reaffirmed.
There had been concerns among some onlookers about the viability of female officials taking charge of fixtures involving countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and hosts Qatar but Collina moved to clarify the situation.
There were three female referees - Rwanda's Salima Mukansanga, Japan's Yoshimi Yamashita and Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappart - appointed by FIFA for the tournament. There are three female assistants also present in Qatar.
Pierluigi Collina outlined that there are no restrictions on referees as per national restrictions
Restrictions are only subject to nationality and language with selection otherwise based on performance.
The female referees will also wear shorts, despite regulations in Qatar stipulating that women should wear modest dress below the knee.
Speaking on the eve of the tournament, Collina said: 'It [the presence of female referees] is something new, it's something that attracts attention, it attracts interest.
Stephanie Frappart won three IFFHS World's Best Woman Referee titles from 2019 to 2021
