While there were several questions raised over the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, one that was left unanswered until now was the mystery of host Morgan Freeman's single glove.

The disgraced actor was chosen to host the Qatar curtain-raiser along with Ghanim al-Muftah in a ceremony that was performed in front of thousands of empty seats in Doha's Al Bayt Stadium.

Viewers would have noticed the 85-year-old acting veteran wearing a single beige-coloured glove as he put on an act to launch the controversial tournament.

It is actually a compression glove and Freeman has been wearing it on and off since paralysing his left hand in a car crash 14 years ago.

While he will often remove it for promotional photos and videos, he elected to keep it on for the World Cup opening ceremony.

Freeman was lucky to survive the crash, which saw his vehicle on a multiple times on a Mississippi highway.

He is also in constant pain due to the chronic muscular condition fibromyalgia, which stems from a broken shoulder suffered in the accident.

His hand sustained severe nerve damage and the compression glove is used to keep blood flowing.

'I suffered nerve damage and it hasn't gotten better. I can't move it,' he said at the time.

'If you don't move your hand, it will swell up. Do you know you move your hand about a million times a day?'

Morgan might have received a cool reception in the Al Khor desert as rows of empty seats greeted him, but the response was warmer on social media.
