Tiger Woods managed only nine rounds of competitive golf across three majors in 2022, but that was apparently enough to claim the top bonus of $15 million in the PGA Tour's Player Impact Program (PIP), which rewards players for drawing attention to the game.

The program is aimed at encouraging golfers to generate positive interest in the Tour. The bonus pool totals $100 million, and was recently expanded from 10 to 20 players after its first season in 2021.

Woods is worth $1.7 billion, according to Forbes, making his $15 million bonus about 8 percent of his net worth.

Woods won the top PIP bonus for the second straight year while playing slightly more often than he did last season.

He was still recovering from a car crash in 2021 and played only two rounds of the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie. This year, he played in three majors, making it to the weekend in two of them, finishing 72 holes only in the Masters.

Woods still ranked No. 1 in four of the five PIP categories. The exception was 'TV Sponsor Exposure,' which is the length of time a player's sponsor logos appear on the screen during weekend rounds. He played only three of those.

The other criteria, according to the PGA, includes:

'Internet Searches: Number of times a player’s name is searched using Google'  'Earned Media: Number of unique news articles that include a player's name' 'Awareness: A player's general awareness score among broad US population ' 'Social Media: Social media score that considers a player’s reach, conversation and engagement metrics'

Rory McIlroy finished second, as reported by The Associated Press two weeks ago, and received a $12 million bonus. Jordan Spieth narrowly beat out Justin Thomas for third place - Spieth got $9 million, Thomas $7.5 million - with Jon Rahm ($6 million) in fifth.
