Free agent NFL coach Sean Payton is eyeing expected openings with the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers, according to multiple reports.
Payton, 58, shocked New Orleans Saints fans by abruptly resigning in January after 15 seasons and a Super Bowl title with the team. Since then, the Saints have struggled, going 4-7 under first-year head coach Dennis Allen, while Payton reportedly remains the top candidate for several teams.
Both ESPN and podcaster Johnny Venerable are reporting Payton's interest in the 4-7 Cardinals and 5-5 Chargers, both of which have failed to meet expectations in 2022. Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury is likely headed for his third straight losing season only five months after the team made a five-year, $230 million commitment to 25-year-old quarterback Kyler Murray. Meanwhile LA's Brandon Staley has taken a step back in his second season at the helm of the Chargers after going 9-8 in 2021.
