Spain and Germany could only play out a tense 1-1 draw on a crucial night of World Cup action that leaves Group E on a knife edge.

Alvaro Morata looked to have all but fired Spain into the last-16 after coming off the bench in the second half, only for Germany to respond with their own late sub as Niclas Fullkrug grabbed what could be a crucial late equaliser.

Here is how Sportsmail rated both sets of players at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Spain (4-3-3)

Unai Simon - Incredibly fortunate to not be punished after giving the ball away on the edge of his own box not once but twice. He was though helpless for Germany's equaliser. 5

Dani Carvajal - Came into the team in place of Cesar Azpilicueta and had a quiet game. Was notable though that Germany exploited space in behind him on a number of occasions. 6

Rodri - Again trusted at centre-back, this time against higher calibre opposition than Costa Rica. He passed this test too and made a crucial interception in stoppage time to block a Sane cross. 7

Aymeric Laporte - Alongside Manchester City team-mate Rodri, the pair once more looked comfortable at the back and their performance together would have been a big plus for boss Luis Enrique. 7

Jordi Alba - Played a delightful assist for Morata's goal and his experience continues to be vital for Spain. Luis Enrique's side conceded seconds after he departed. 7

Gavi - Wasn't as effective as he was in the dominating performance as Spain struggled to create as much clear cut chances. Replaced in the second half. 6.5

Sergio Busquets - Typically wasn't going to featuring in any highlight reels of the game but was a big reason why Spain dominated the midfield. 7

Pedri - Like Gavi, the youngster who starred against Costa Rica found life a bit tougher up against more robust opposition. Didn't play badly but nowhere near as effective as the opening game. 6

Ferran Torres - Scored twice in the opening game but was ineffective here. Even accounting for an offside flag that was raised, he missed an excellent opportunity in the first half before being replaced by Alvaro Morata. 6.5

Marco Asensio - Lacked threat, and missed a good chance to double Spain's lead after blasting way over from the edge of the box. Substituted seconds later to sum up his evening. 6

Dani Olmo - Nearly scored a cracking opening goal in the first half, only to be denied by Neuer's expert save to push his shot onto the bar. Lively in attack and played a superb ball for Asensio that could have doubled Spain's lead at 1-0. 8
