Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has issued an apology to Lionel Messi over Twitter to officially end their spat, after the four-weight world champion boxer accused the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner of disrespecting his country, Mexico. 

Canelo had launched an attack on the PSG star over social media following footage of the Albiceleste's celebrations after a 2-0 win over El Tri appeared to show Messi's foot brushing against a Mexican jersey on the floor of the dressing-room. 

Several players had rushed to the defence of Messi, including friends and former team-mates Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Aguero, as well as Mexican internationals Miguel Layun and Andres Guadrado.

Canelo officially buried the hatchet with the Argentine hero, insisting that he got 'carried away' due to the love he feels for his country. 

It read: 'These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologise to Messi and the people of Argentina. 

'Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn.
