Socceroos captain Mathew Ryan has hinted he is going to break one of coach Graham Arnold's strict rules after the team progressed to the final 16 of the World Cup, sparking wild celebrations back home.

The Aussies are the toast of the nation after a famous 1-0 upset against Denmark saw them progress to the next stage of the tournament for just the second time in history.

The victory sparked jubilant scenes across Australia, including Melbourne's Federation Square packed with thousands of fans who woke at 2am to witness one of the biggest moments for Australian soccer.

Captain and goalkeeper Matt Ryan was among the Socceroos heroes with a second consecutive clean sheet.

Coach Graham Arnold has banned his players from social media as he tells them to remain focused on the World Cup.

But Ryan hinted that rule has been broken when he was asked if the Socceroos were aware of the wild celebrations back home.
