Charlie Austin has rowed back on his World Cup predictions, suggesting that critics, himself included, needed to to take a long hard look at themselves after the Socceroos reached the Round of 16.
Mathew Leckie scored the only goal of the game on Thursday morning (AEDT) as Australia beat Denmark 1-0 to finish second in Group D and qualify for the knockout stages for the first time since 2006 and for only the second time in their history.
And Austin was very impressed by what he saw.
Charlie Austin urged Australia's critics to take a long hard look at themselves
'Wake up this morning to see the Australia result, superb that whoever doubted them need to have a good hard look in the mirror,' the Brisbane Roar striker tweeted.
And the former QPR and Southampton man is among those who will have helped themselves to a large slice of humble pie after the Socceroos booked a date with Argentina in the Round of 16.
Last month, Austin wrote off Australia's chances of qualifying for the knockout stages, claiming they would lose all their three games in Qatar.
