After years of trying to accomplish that, change is coming soon. The CFP announced Thursday that the committee will expand the field of teams to 12 beginning in the 2024-25 season. A final hurdle was seemingly cleared yesterday, when the group that organizes the Rose Bowl agreed to expansion. The College Football Playoff will officially expand its field to 12 teams in the 2024-25 season With the six CFP bowl games - the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Cotton Bowl - all agreeing to expansion, the deal was announced officially earlier today. The CFP also revealed a schedule and structure for how the 12 teams will play each other. Games will be played at the home sites of the higher seeds (5,6,7, and 8) on the week ending in December 21, 2024. Each of the four quarterfinal games and two semifinals will rotate between the six bowls. In 2024, the Fiesta, Peach, Rose, and Sugar Bowls will host the quarterfinals - with the Cotton and Orange Bowls set to have the semifinals. In 2025, the Fiesta and Peach Bowls will host the semifinals. A visual of how a 12 team College Football Playoff would look using the Week 14 CFP rankings All of that leads to neutral site, non-bowl national championship games. The 24-25 season will end in Atlanta, while the 25-26 season will end in Miami. There has been opposition to expansion from coaches at major programs in the past. Two-time national champion and Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney previously criticized bringing in 12 teams, saying in 2021, 'Our team isn't for it. They don't want to play more games. And to be honest with you, I don't know if there's 12 teams good enough 'So you're going to play more games just to play more games. And I think the more you expand it, the less important the season becomes.' More teams will be fighting for the national championship trophy than ever before in 2024 Swinney later changed his mind on expansion, saying earlier this season, 'Bring it on. Let's go. Tell us what the rules are and we'll be ready to play.' Alabama's seven-time title winning head coach Nick Saban is also in favor of bringing 12 teams into the mix. 'Bowl games are not something players want to play in, Saban said back in September. 'Now players opt out of that if it's not part of the playoff," he said. "Therefore, I'm for expanding the playoffs." Approval from the committee behind the Rose Bowl was the final hurdle cleared for expansion Expanding the playoff will allow for two-loss teams to be included in the fight for a title, teams the CFP selection committee have repeatedly shunned from previous tournaments. The committee has included a one-loss team that hasn't won their conference title multiple times at the expense of two-loss teams that did win their conference crown. In the 2016-17 season, an 11-1 Ohio State team was ranked third and put into the playoff. Meanwhile an 11-2 Penn State team - who won the Big Ten title and beat Ohio State that year - was left out. The following year, Ohio State would be the victim of the committee's vendetta against two-loss teams. The Buckeyes won the Big Ten, but Alabama was put in ahead of them. That Crimson Tide team eventually won the national championship. Share or comment on this article: All rights reserved for this news site (dailymail) and under his responsibility
