Darwin Nunez has issued an emotional apology to the Uruguayan people after the South Americans failed to advance to the World Cup knock-out stage.

Uruguay missed out on qualifying from Group H on goals scored despite their 2-0 win over Ghana yesterday, with South Korea beating Portugal to progress to the last 16 instead.

Nunez took to social media to apologise for the two-time World Cup winners early exit, which the 23-year-old claims the team 'didn't deserve'.

'We didn't deserve this ending but the dream ended,' Nunez said. 'Sorry to all the Uruguayan people.' 

Nunez had started all three of Uruguay's Group H matches, but was substituted in the latter stages of ties against Portugal and Ghana.

Liverpool's record signing ended the World Cup without a goal or assist to his name, having had a largely quiet campaign.
