Fresh from copping a large dosage of criticism for releasing the Round 1 fixtures during the Socceroos' World Cup game against Argentina, the AFL have suffered another faux pas this week. Tasked with conjuring up a name for the extra round to be hosted in South Australia in April next year that differs from the NRL's 'Magic Round', 7Sport reports that the AFL has come up with 'Gather Round... a festival of footy'. AFL supporters have blasted the league for their new name for next year's 'magic round' Reports claim that the AFL have conjured up: 'Gather Round... a festival of footy' for April 2023 However, fans are far from impressed with the AFL's effort and have taken to Twitter to air their grievances with 'Gather Round'. 'Back to the drawing board that name absolutely stinks,' one fan said. A second added: 'That name is the worst thing to come out of AFL House since AFLX.' A string of fans commented: 'Worst. Name. Ever', 'terrible' and 'what a bloody joke.' One AFL supporter quipped: 'I'm sure they had a 2 day session to come up with this.' Fans have blasted the 'terrible' new name on Twitter and have insisted 'it absolutely stinks' Another said: 'Have to say it is the silliest idea that anyone has pinched from someone else. Absolutely valueless.' 'Gather Round doesn't sound that great ngl [not going to lie],' a third added. 'But happy Adelaide gets to have the opportunity to host this.' The AFL received hundreds of submissions from supporters over the past month in relation to the new name, but settled for 'Gather Round... a festival of footy'.
