Walker was an uber talented defensive end in high school who had obtained scholarship offers from Kentucky, Michigan State, and other schools around college football. He was on his way to obtaining a scholarship Michigan, the school of his dreams, when he was diagnosed with a type of bone cancer known as Osteosarcoma. Dametrius "Meechie" Walker passed away after a two-year bout with Osteosarcoma cancer The University of Michigan football program post an official goodbye statement to Walker According to mayoclinic.org, Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. Osteosarcoma is most often found in the long bones — more often the legs, but sometimes the arms — but it can start in any bone. In very rare instances, it occurs in soft tissue outside the bone. Walker originally had discovered a bump on the outside of his knee in November of 2020, before enduring months of chemotherapy and eventually having his leg amputated in April of 2021 in an attempt to stop the cancer from continuing to spread. After Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh learned of Walker's fight the team invited the former recruit to attend a practice in August and be welcomed as part of the Michigan football program. Walker was once a prized high school recruit who obtained multiple Division 1 scholarship offers, before his bout with cancer ended his promising football career Walker and his family pose for picture on sidelines during Michigan vs Maryland football game Walker's mother Leona Bell told ESPN: 'Meechie was hurting so bad that day. His whole body was just in excruciating pain and he just smiled like nothing ever happened. Like he wasn't even in pain.' His mother would go on to refer to his visit as the 'miracle of Michigan,' saying that it helped wake up from the months of pain he had been experiencing. Harbaugh would go on to invite Walker to the game against Maryland that weekend, which the coach would also dedicate to the young man known as 'Meechie.' The fans having already heard about his story and how much it meant to Walker to feel like part of the Wolverines team they greeted him with a tremendous ovation when his name was announced over the loudspeaker. The moment was enough to cause him to wipe tears from his eyes.
