Scott Boland admitted he 'couldn’t have dreamt' about getting three wickets in the same over after he put Australia on the brink of wrapping the second Test against the Windies.

The 33-year-old made the headlines last year, taking 6-7 in England's second innings as Australia won the Boxing Day Test at the MCG by an innings and 14 runs.

And Boland produced another superb bowling display on Saturday, ripping through the West Indies batting line-up with a triple-wicket maiden to finish with figures of 3-9 off six overs at the Adelaide Oval.

'It was a nice feeling - it gives you a bit of confidence for the rest of your spell,' he told cricket.com.au

'Getting three in an over, I couldn’t have dreamt of that.'

The Victorian drew the edge of West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite on his first ball of the night, before trapping Shamarh Brooks lbw and getting Jermaine Blackwood to a superb Cameron Green catch in the gully in the same over.

Following his exploits on Saturday, Boland's Test average is 10 - the best in Test history of any player with 20 or more wickets.

'That was pretty awesome,' he told Fox Cricket.

'I thought I bowled pretty well in the first innings but didn't get any wickets so it was nice to get a couple of wickets there.

'I tried to be a little bit fuller [in the second innings], compared to some of my spells over the last two days. It worked.'

It came amid debate about whether Michael Neser deserved the third bowling spot at the Gabba if Pat Cummins recovers from injury and Josh Hazlewood is ruled out.
