England crashed out of the World Cup in heart-breaking circumstances as they lost 2-1 to France in the quarter-finals.

Harry Kane sent a late penalty over the crossbar when presented with the opportunity to force extra time, having earlier drawn England level at 1-1.

But Olivier Giroud headed home what proved to be the winner 12 minutes from time as the reigning champions progressed to face Morocco in the semi-finals.

GERRY COX rated all of the England and France players at the Al-Bayt Stadium.

ENGLAND RATINGS

JORDAN PICKFORD The Everton keeper had little chances with either goal. Made one easy save from Giroud's close range header early on and a great one from a Rabiot long shot and then a Giroud volley. 7

KYLE WALKER Was always going to be under the spotlight, up against Mbappe, and was coping well until he got caught upfield when France broke away to open the scoring. Did not get forward as much as usual, mindful of Mbappe's threat. 6.5

JOHN STONES Looked composed on the ball but was caught out when Giroud scored the winner in the 78th minute. His partnership with Maguire was looking good up to that moment. Went off injured in the closing stages. 6

HARRY MAGUIRE England's renaissance man this tournament, showing he is back to his best winning headers in both penalty areas and good with the ball. Went close with a header in the 70th minute. 7

LUKE SHAW Did not get forward as much as usual in the first half, mindful of the speed of Dembele, and was caught out once or twice. Superb cross almost led to a goal on 70 minutes. 6

JORDAN HENDERSON Struggled to link effectively with Saka or Walker on the right. Caught in possession more than once and gave away cheap free-kicks by fouling Mbappe. One good shot blocked. 6

DECLAN RICE Overcame a bout of sickness to take his place in deep midfield and did his usual job of breaking up play and helping England keep the ball. Had his hands full with Griezmann but never stopped running. 6.5

JUDE BELLINGHAM England's breakout star, the teenager started slowly but got more into the game after 20 minutes or so and started to give the French defence real problems with his runs and passes. One volley brilliantly saved by Lloris 7.5

BUKAYO SAKA Poor in the first half, getting caught in possession too often, but big improvement after the break and his driving run brought the penalty from which England equalised. 6.5

HARRY KANE The England captain will never live down the penalty miss that could have taken the game to extra time. Earlier equalled Wayne Rooney's record of 53 goals with his equaliser from the penalty spot and could have had a hat-trick but for three saves by his Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris. 7
