Harry Kane and Gareth Bale. Two household names in British football culture. Yet, despite the many similarities between the two they remain a world apart.

Ex-Real Madrid star Bale shocked the world as he announced his sudden retirement from football on Monday afternoon - calling an end to his illustrious playing career which saw him win a total of 17 trophies.

Kane, on the other hand, has neither retired nor won a trophy yet. It's certainly not too late for him to achieve the latter, though the window of opportunity is closing.

Spurs seem to be getting progressively worse and interest from clubs such as Man United won't stick around forever. So, is it a case of now-or-never for the England captain?

Gareth Bale posted an emotional statement on social media declaring his decision to retire from club and international football on Monday, catching the world of football off guard with his announcement.

The 33-year-old only signed with MLS side Los Angeles FC in the summer and vowed to have years left in football, however he has now U-turned on that path with his message.

Plaudits for Bale poured in and pundits, players and fans alike were quick to write tributes about the Welshman and his contributions to British football after the news.

Many labelled Bale as 'the greatest British player of all time' - which is hard to dispute given the ridiculous trophy haul that he'll walk away with upon retiring.

Perhaps on an individual level, Kane will feel harshly overlooked for that title - especially if he becomes the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer - but it's hard to compete with the honours of his former team-mate.

Five Champions Leagues. Three LaLigas. Three Club World Cups. Three UEFA Super Cups. One Copa Del Rey. One Spanish Super Cup. And for good measure; one MLS Cup.

Kane, for comparison, has just a handful of runner-up medals to his name. EFL Cup in 2015 and 2021. Champions League final 2019. UEFA Euros final in 2021.

For whatever reason, Tottenham seem to be cursed in their search for silverware. Even with both legendary players on-field together in the 2021 Carabao Cup final, Spurs were comprehensively beaten by Pep Guardiola's Man City.

Bale had returned to north London on loan that year, after being frozen out at Madrid, and failed to a win a
