The Netflix cameras were rolling for their behind-the-scenes Six Nations series at Wales’ Vale of Glamorgan training base on Tuesday and they were only focused on one man. Warren Gatland did not disappoint those behind the lens.
The New Zealander’s words were softly spoken, but each and every one carried weight. Gatland reserved his strongest thoughts for when the topic turned to Rob Howley, his old friend who he wanted to re-appoint to the Wales set-up.
Such a move was blocked by the Welsh Rugby Union. Howley was banned for 18 months for breaching betting rules when still Wales attack coach in 2019 and there was a feeling that made bringing back the former scrum-half a difficult proposition. Gatland clearly disagreed.

‘You’d like to think that if anyone was going to be forgiving, it would be the Welsh forgiving their own,’ he said. ‘It’s been over three years now, but that’s not the case at the moment.‘
A lot of that stuff about Rob has been fairly well documented. I’m sure that given the opportunity I’ll get the chance to work with him again in the future.
‘I would have loved to have had Rob. I’ve got a huge amount of love and respect for him and worked closely with him. The information given to me was that the timing wasn’t right.
‘I’d like to see him involved at the highest possible level again in the future.
