Owen Williams came back to haunt his former club on Friday as he converted Jac Morgan’s try deep in injury-time to earn the Ospreys their first Champions Cup knock-out tie since 2010.
Leicester were leading 26-20 with 80 minutes on the clock and appeared to have done enough to secure a home fixture in the last 16. However, the visitors laid siege to the Tigers 22 and eventually Wales flanker Morgan went over, after a series of near-misses in the preceding minutes. Following a lengthy TMO review, the try was awarded and Williams struck the conversion – to a backdrop of loud boos from the stands – to snatch the spoils.
This is a remarkable coup for Toby Booth and his Ospreys side. Tries by Dewi Lake and Keelan Giles had kept them in the hunt and they had enough stamina and nous in the dramatic finale to add the scalp of the English champions to their home-and-away wins against French champions Montpellier. They are currently languishing in 13th place in the United Rugby Championship, but their feats in this event are providing a timely boost to Welsh rugby, which has been enduring tough times of late.
