Antonio Conte has confirmed surgery to remove his gallbladder has 'gone well' and said he 'can't wait' to return as the Tottenham head coach prepares to undergo a period of recovery.

Conte underwent the operation in Italy today after been diagnosed with cholecystitis, an inflammation of the gallbladder usually caused by gallstones.

The 53-year-old had been diagnosed after suffering from severe abdominal pain when he was spending time with his family in Turin, following Tottenham's FA Cup win over Preston.

In an Instagram message, Conte confirmed the surgery had gone well and thanked fans for their support. 

'Thank you for your lovely messages, my surgery has gone well and I’m already feeling better,' Conte wrote. 'Now’s time to recover, I can’t wait to get back on the field with the team.'

Conte will now have a period of recuperation and will return to London when he is able to do so.

The surgery is a routine procedure, often performed by keyhole surgery, in which case the patient can be out of hospital on the same day and back in normal activities within a week or two.

Assistant manager Cristian Stellini stepped in as the Spurs players returned to training on Tuesday.

Stellini is expected to oversee preparations for Tottenham's Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday.
