A senior coach for the GWS Giants has been fired from his AFL club after undercover cops busted him buying cocaine during a nighttime 'jog'.

Robert Chancellor, 31, the head of development for the western Sydney team, was arrested outside his Marrickville home just before 8pm on December 10 after being found with 0.87g of cocaine.

Chancellor moved to Sydney in September to start his coveted GWS Giants role but was fired four months later, just days after Daily Mail Australia exclusively revealed he had been charged. 

His coaching profile on the GWS Giants website has also vanished. 

Chancellor was due to be sentenced at Newtown Local Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to one count of possess a prohibited drug last month.

However, the embattled football coach instead made a bid to have the matter postponed.

Appearing on his behalf, Chancellor's lawyer asked Magistrate Lisa Stapleton for the case to be adjourned to allow him to complete the Magistrates Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) Program. 

According to a NSW government website, the 12-week voluntary program 'targets people who are eligible and suitable for release on bail and who are motivated to engage in treatment and rehabilitation'.

Magistrates then consider the participant's progress in treatment as part of final sentencing.

Magistrate Stapleton agreed to the request and rescheduled the matter for May 2.  

Court documents previously obtained by Daily Mail Australia revealed officers started followed Chancellor last December after spotting him acting suspiciously as he jogged along Addison Road about 7.50pm. 

After running down a few streets, Chancellor stopped near a black Toyota and leaned in the driver's window before putting something into his front pocket. 

The vehicle drove away and Chancellor walked back towards his home, where he was
