Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is set to return to the touchline for tonight's crucial Champions League last-16 second leg clash against AC Milan.

He is likely to get a warm reception from the home crowd after a difficult period away from the team that has seen him miss a number of matches while he has recovered from gallbladder surgery.

Sportsmail explains why he has been away from the dugout, the setback that he suffered, and how Tottenham have fared in his absence.


What happened to Conte? 

The Tottenham manager started to experience severe abdominal pain in late January, and after undergoing tests he was diagnosed with cholecystitis, an inflammation of the gallbladder usually caused by gallstones.

On February 1, he confirmed that he'd had an operation to remove his gallbladder and declared: 'I can't wait to get back on the field with the team'.

With his operation taking place just four days before Tottenham hosted Manchester City, Conte was not on the touchline for that game, but returned to work just days later.

Did Conte return to work too early? 

By his own admission, Conte was desperate to get back to Tottenham to help his side with their push for a top-four finish, even if this meant ignoring doctor's advice.

Just 10 days after his operation, he was with his team for their trip to Leicester, but it proved to be a disastrous afternoon for the north London club as they suffered a humbling 4-1 defeat.

Four days later, Conte was back in Italy as Tottenham travelled to Milan to take on the Rossoneri
