New York Mets fans have ripped into the World Baseball Classic after they were left furious over pitcher Edwin Diaz's injury. 

The reliever was carried off the field after suffering what appeared to be a catastrophic injury Puerto Rico's win in the World Baseball Classic.

Diaz's Puerto Rico squad had just recorded a massive win 5-2 over the Dominican Republic and were huddled together jumping up and down after the immediate conclusion of the game when he was hurt.

Diaz was unable to put weight on his knee as he was helped off the field and left under the diamond in a wheelchair.

The Mets later confirmed that he had suffered a right knee injury and would undergo further imaging Thursday, sending fans into a spiral.

The injury comes as a massive blow to the Mets after they re-signed the closer to a five-year, $102 million contract, the largest ever given to a relief pitcher with supporters branding it a 'nightmare.'

With the start of the MLB season just two weeks away, while other baseball fans and reporters questioned why teams send major leaguers to the MLB during spring training. 

Sal Licata, a host for SNY and WFAN, posted a video reacting to the news and did not hold back his feelings.

'I told you about this stupid… stupid tournament. Stupid worthless exhibition tournament that everybody loves and goes crazy about,' Licata said. 'I've been telling you about it.

'The Mets are paying Edwin Diaz, how much money? And he chose to go play in the WBC, and he gets hurt celebrating. Celebrating a win. Nice start to a World Series-or-bust year. Thanks to the WBC! Thanks commish, and everybody who participated in it. Can't wait to see who wins!' 

Renowned Mets fan and Barstool Sports personality Frank Fleming launched into a tirade on social media, seemingly having given up on New York's season before it even really begun. 

'Even when the Mets spend it falls apart,' he posted. 'This year is f***ed and next year is only gonna get worse. There is never anything positive.' 

He added: 'There is no way the Mets contend this season. Scherzer and Verlander will be even older next year and Diaz will likely never be the same. It is over last year was their once shot now its all s**t again.'

KFC, another popular Barstool personality and Mets fan, wasn't quite as enraged as Fleming but still blasted the situation.

'The people who are defending the WBC are such dorks,' KFC wrote. 'That tournament sucks and is absolutely not worth risking exactly what unfolded tonight. Nobody cares and all of you pretending to care are lame.'

Jerry Blevins, a former Mets pitcher who now also works for SNY and Jomboy Media, called the injury a 'nightmare scenario,' adding: 'This is the big fears MLB players & teams have with participating in the Tournament.' 

Meanwhile , MLB content creator Marc Luino: 'This is literally a f***ing nightmare. No way Edwin Diaz just blew out his knee celebrating a big win in the WBC.'

'If anyone is looking for me I'll be crying myself to sleep,' John Mincone joked. 

New York-area sports producer Danny Abriano claimed the Mets will be forced into 'scramble mode' if Diaz, a key member of the team, is you for a long period. 

'Edwin Diaz is quite literally irreplaceable,' he tweeted. 'He is the best and most dominant closer in baseball He is one of the keys to the Mets' World Series hopes If he's out for a long time, Mets are in scramble mode.'
