Steve Borthwick won't be happy when he looks back on his first competition as England coach but it wouldn't have been any better under Eddie Jones.

If anything, I think they could have been worse under Eddie because their confidence looked shot in the autumn. You could tell they were done in.

Yes, the defeat by France last week was a total calamity but at least there appeared to be some clarity against Ireland. They didn't fold after the ridiculous red card for Freddie Steward. There was none of the aimless kicking that defined Eddie's final campaign.

The reality is that England are a mid-table team at present. They should be beating Scotland but they're miles behind France and Ireland and it's hard to see them bridging that gap before the World Cup.
