Former Cronulla Sharks player Lindsay Bowne has revealed that he now takes up to 30 Panadol a week to deal with agonising headaches that have greatly impacted his life since he retired from the sport.

The 56-year-old who played two seasons with the Sharks in the early 90s, and roughly 250 games of bush footy, says he suffered many concussions on the pitch as a younger man.

Bowne could have benefitted from the NRL's new 11-day concussion stand-down rule when he was playing, and now wants to add his voice to the concussion debate that is gripping the game.

'I didn't keep count, but I probably got concussed more than a dozen times,' he revealed to News Corp.

'I wasn't a great player, but we played hard and got lots of knocks. The contact was ferocious. You'd get a heavy knock but you'd get back up and go again.'

Life hasn't been easy for Bowne since he stopped playing 25 years ago, with bouts of depression, failed relationships and constant headaches.

'I don't talk much,' Bowne says. 'Even at dinner. My head's just going bang, bang. It probably cost me my last relationship.

'My previous partner used to say, 'you don't talk much, you don't talk much'.

'I used to have to drive from Tamworth to Quirindi, about 45 minutes, in my job as a racecourse manager. Sometimes I'd have to pull over to the side of the road. I was feeling that crook.'

Bowne is resigned to living with his pain that is sometimes so intolerable that he has to sleep on the bathroom
