sport news Aaron Rodgers: Joe Banner says New York Jets have all the leverage over Green ... trends now

Joe Banner, the former president of the Philadelphia Eagles, has claimed that the New York Jets have all the leverage in the world to complete a trade with the Green Bay Packers for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Considered by many as one of the the most accomplished executives in NFL history, Banner, who led the Eagles to the second-most amount of playoff wins during the 2000s (only behind Tom Brady and the New England Patriots), is adamant about the Jets' chances of being able to play the waiting game in the long run 'without any risk or consequence'.

'The Packers, by waiting, risk that, for some reason, the Jets would not be interested, and then they have no one [to trade with], which really ruins their team for two, probably three years,' the 70-year-old, who was also CEO of the Cleveland Browns from 2012-2013, told The New York Post

'Believing the Jets will do something that will reflect impatience is not leverage. That's just hoping they're stupid. Leverage is putting the Packers in a position where they could lose the only interested team, which creates a complete disaster for them.'

On Sunday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on 'SportsCenter' that trade talks between the Jets and the Packers started before Super Bowl LVII, and that the Jets front office thinks it can afford to stay patient, as its members are confident that things will work out in their favor.

The standoff could also take a while due to Green Bay not feeling any pressure to pay Rodgers his $58million option bonus until Week 1 of the 2023 season, meaning there is no real deadline to agree on a trade.

The Jets' offseason programs do not kick off until April 17, but because Rodgers knows new 'Gang Green' offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett from their time together in Green Bay, he wouldn't need as much time as a new recruit would normally need to adapt to a team's offensive system.

Banner thinks the Jets are under some pressure to get the trade done due to the team's unreliable options at quarterback, but even more so, believes that the Packers are in an untenable position as there is no way they can take Rodgers back.
